Primary Function: This position directs, develops, and oversees the general safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate reporting. Implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and review of safety and health programs
  • Directs the activities of safety staff
  • Work closely with various managers in the implementation of safety programs.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines
  • Analyze safety trends and develop strategies and plans for improvement
  • Lead safety and health committee
  • Evaluate a changing working environment for hazards and identify means to eliminate or minimize hazards
  • Work with insurance company in areas of risk control
  • Maintain safety files and records
  • Assist in maintaining permits and licenses
  • Design safety training for employees
  • Assist Supervisors with incident reporting process
  • Provide assistance to management with incident root cause analysis and in determining future preventative measures
  • Work with HR and front-line Supervisors to assist in management of workers compensation cases
  • Communicate safety statistics, incident trends, serious incidents and regulatory changes to all levels of management
  • Establish direction and consistency in safety and compliance activities
  • Produce and distribute management reports of safety performance
  • Provides health, safety and environmental compliance support and awareness training with all levels of management
  • Lead investigation of key accident events, including development of prevention strategies to prevent reoccurrence
  • Provide a positive leadership example by demonstrating safe behaviors and encouraging those behaviors in others
  • Monitors the health and environmental standards in compliance with applicable laws and regulations· Manage a formal program of facility evaluation to measure and report on the level of safety, health and environmental performance
  • Manage a formal program of proactive reporting to field operations regarding status of DOT compliance and safety performance.
  • Conduct regular analysis of statistical information, preparing and distributing relevant performance measurement reports, describing actual performance and/or opportunities for improvement
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications/Experience/Education

This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in safety or management and preferable 5-7 years of position related experience. Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills and working knowledge of MIOSHA, DOT rules and regulations, as well as HAZMAT regulations. Knowledge of quality control methods desired. Must have the ability to train others.

Work will be a combination of an office setting and in multiple locations and will require physical effort walking or standing for long periods of time.

May be required to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects up to 25 pounds. Frequent regional travel will be required.
